Second
Life®:
An Inexpensive Way to Introduce Virtual Worlds into Your Learning
Strategy

Hospital in Second Life |
The
fundamental advantage of Second Life is affordability.
Second Life is free to join. Premium membership and
land ownership are reasonably priced. A private region
can be purchased from Linden Lab for $1,000 (US$) plus
a monthly fee of $295 (US$). (The buyer would then need
to create 3-D content or hire a developer to do so.)
Thus, Second Life is a means to access a 3-D virtual
environment for learning, other than high-end environments
created for the military and other unique training requirements.
|
Second
Life can be used effectively for different types of employee
training:
- Movement
in 3-D space — Second Life could be useful
in any learning situation involving movement, danger, tactics,
or quick physical decisions, such as emergency response.
- Engendering
empathy — Second Life lets participants experience
scenarios from another person’s perspective. As an example,
UC Davis Virtual Hallucinations in Second Life allows visitors
to experience virtually the hallucinations that a patient
suffering from schizophrenia might experience.
- Rapid
prototyping and co-design — Second Life is
an inexpensive environment for quickly mocking up prototypes
of products. The NASA CoLab’s Test Bed in Second Life
serves exactly that function. The Tech Museum invites the
public to mock up virtual museum exhibits in Second Life
that can either remain virtual or can be created in real
life.
- Role
playing — Second Life provides a way to conduct
role plays in realistic settings. Instructors and learners
can take on various avatars and play those characters.
- Alternative
means of online interaction — Although users
would likely not choose Second Life as a primary technology
for pure online communication, it provides an alternative
means of indicating presence and allowing interaction. Users
can have conversations, share note cards, and give
presentations.
